With virtually no over-the-counter tags to be had, hunting Pronghorn takes a certain amount of advance planning. There are several locations to hunt speed-goats, but monster bucks are not that common. Here are our top states to kill a big-daddy buck.
Arizona
The home of monsters, Arizona is a great state to take an once-in-a-lifetime animal. Arizona has over 320 Boone & Crockett (B&C) entries and it is home to both B&C and Pope & Young world records. Coconino and Mohave counties are where those two bucks were killed. Other hot counties are Yavapai and Navajo.
Wyoming
Everyone knows Wyoming holds the largest Pronghorn herd in the world. Having that many Pronghorns means plenty of opportunities and the trophies are there. The southern portion of the state holds some big boys and more specifically units, 57-61, and unit 63. Most of the good units have a lot of public hunting land available but tags are harder to get. The chance for an above average buck makes this area of Wyoming worth applying for. Wyoming leads the league in B&C entries with over 1059 on the books.
New Mexico
This is a tough place to draw a non-resident tag if you want to hunt public land and the state is not very non-resident friendly, but every single unit has the potential for killing a true trophy. The Boone & Crockett club is very busy these days processing trophy entry applications from New Mexico as they currently have over 560 entries.
Colorado
The top counties in Colorado are Rio Grande, Las Animas, Weld, Moffat and Jackson. Colorado is number six on the list of B&C animals with over 140. Tags are not too difficult to draw with most requiring two years of application attempts.
Nevada
Nevada is fourth in B&C entries with over 262. Tags take a while for non-residents but hunters going with outfitters have an advantage in drawing a tag. The state’s best Pronghorn is a 94 inch beast from Washoe County not far from the city of Reno. The best counties are Elko, Humboldt, Pershing, White Pine and of course, Washoe County.
Montana
With over 180 B&C entries, Montana is often an overlooked trophy Pronghorn destination. Some of the best counties are Rosebud, Carter, Custer, Garfield and Powder River.
Tags can be extremely difficult to draw in some areas.
Texas and Oregon
Both of these states are sleepers for large bucks. They both have over 130 B&C entries and that is about all these two states have in common. Oregon’s best Pronghorn counties are Harney, Baker, Deschutes and Malheur. Texas hotspots include Hartley, Hudspeth, Dallam, Lipscomb and Brewster.
