Skeptical that your Nike+ Fuelband wasn’t quite counting those steps correctly? Maybe you haven’t actually walked a mile to breakfast this morning. Well you’re not alone.
In a proposed settlement to a class action lawsuit, Nike and Apple have agreed to pay $2.4 million to consumers who may have been duped. For every Fuelband sold between January 2012 and January 2015, buyers will receive a $15 cash payment or a $25 Nike gift card.
As thousands of Americans sporting the latest fitness tracking devices have discovered, they are not always that accurate. One woman, Carolyn Levin, took the case to work, which resulted in the class action. The basic argument was that the devices did not work as advertised.
In recent years, fitness monitoring products have flooded the market, accounting for some of the most popular gifts in 2014. By 2019, the market is expected to hit $5 billion.
