Ever wondered how wild animals would act if they saw themselves in a mirror? If you ever tried this with the family dog you’ll know it can be amusing as well as a bit cruel to put a mirror in front of a lame-brained animal that can’t tell the difference. Well, this video is no exception.
As you’ll see in the below video from Caters News Agency, wild animals have a hard time distinguishing their own image at first until some of them eventually get it. Photographer Xavier Hubert-Brierre travelled to Gabon with his wife and set up a mirror in a wild animal park to see what happens.
Their reactions are quite amusing as leopards claw at the mirror and a gorilla charges aggressively. Another group of gorillas flank to the side trying to approach what they believe are other gorillas. An exotic bird flies right into it at one point, which is kinda messed up.
By the end, the chimpanzees have figured it out and they are using the mirror to groom themselves, proving once again that even our vanity is closely tied to primates. Faced with a camera, too, animals can put on some funny faces. Check out the following gallery of amusing animal photos.
