A hunting guide and his client were wounded in a gunfight with assailants on a remote West Texas ranch near the Mexico border.
Walter Daugherty, 26, was airlifted to a hospital where he’s recovering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His client, Edwin Roberts, 59, suffered a gunshot to the arm and was reportedly going to fine, based on reports by The Westerner and the Albuquerque Journal.
Daugherty and his family have reportedly been leading hunts at the Circle Dug Ranch among 20,000 acres of private property for many years. The territory borders the Mexico border and there had been recent reports of theft occurring on the land.
During the night of the shooting, Daugherty said he heard noises outside and left the lodge where he and his wife, along with another guide and his wife were staying.
Daugherty said he immediately saw a group of men surrounding the RV where his client and his wife were staying. It looked like they were attempting to take the RV, which was being fired on repeatedly, according to The Westerner.
So Daugherty along with his partner, Michael Bryant, armed themselves and returned fire. It was while going inside to retrieve more ammo that Daugherty took a gunshot to his abdomen.
Fortunately, the client and his wife were able to get away in the RV and the assailants fled the scene. One of the women was a nurse and was able to assist Daugherty with medical attention until paramedics arrived. It would take Sheriff Deputies more than an hour to arrive to this remote location.
