Coming off a summer last year that saw the most shark encounters in decades, you can understand why officials were extra precautious after a shark knocked a surfer off his board at a Southern California beach over the weekend.
Officials closed a stretch of beach at Bolsa Chica State Park in Orange County for the remainder of the day March 13 after the surfer’s story was deemed credible, according to the LA Times.
The beach was closed for the rest of the day but the beach remained open.
This is not the first time this stretch of beach has seen shark activity. Last summer, lifeguards closed water access after a 7-foot shark showed “aggressive behaivor” to a surfer. And a few months later a 10-foot shark charged a surfer prompting another temporary closure.
