There are no guarantees in fishing. On any given trip to the lake, the same lure that pulled fish after fish to the boat one morning isn’t even drawing a strike the next.
Things can get even tougher when you’re on a fishing trip in some faraway part of the country, which is where local guides come into play.
I’ve hired guides on several occasions and I’m glad I did. Here are 5 reasons why you should look into checking out local fishing guides when you’re fishing in unfamiliar waters.
You’ll Learn Faster
Much of what we learn in fishing comes through a bit of trial and error on our part, spread over several years. When you’re fishing an exotic location, it’s not weak to admit you don’t know it all. A guide will teach you what works in their neck of the woods and basically give you a condensed crash course in how to fish their waters. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or even take notes; many guides are more than willing to share a fair bit of knowledge.
You Can Travel Light
Most anglers feel naked without their tried and true rod and reel combo, but it can be easier and less stressful to leave your gear at home. Guides and charters typically provide their clients with all the gear they need. This not only means rods and reels, but also line, tackle and bait designed for their local waters.
Paid to Find Fish
Normally when you hit your local lake, the pressure’s on you to find the fish and achieve success. When you hire a guide to lead you around foreign waters, though, that pressure shifts from your shoulders to the guide’s. They’ll take you to the best holes, rig your bait for you and some even clean your fish at the end of the day.
Build a Relationship
When you find a guide you get along with really well, it makes your day on the water that much more enjoyable. Furthermore, clicking with a guide sets you up as a repeat client if/when you’re in the area again, which not only assures you of fruitful future trips, but also provides that guide with a solid business relationship. Bonus Tip: If your guide is a good one, it’s just respectful to grab a few of their business cards to give to people you know who are looking into booking a trip of their own.
Grow as an Angler
Soaking in the new knowledge your guide shares will go a long way towards your maturity as a fisherman and as a person. Re-learning how to adjust to brand new situations and tactics on the fly strengthens your mind, nerve and reflexes. It also adds to your fishing repertoire, making you a more well-rounded and experienced angler overall.
