Fishermen are a tough bunch to have on your Christmas shopping list. We’re so picky about everything from the size of a lure’s treble hooks to whether or not a 7’ or 7’2 rod is ideal for our needs.
To outsiders, this sort of specificity may seem insane, but experienced anglers know the potential rewards for paying attention to detail; often times it’s those details that land big fish.
How do you Christmas shop for the angler in your life, however, with this in mind? One great gift that every angler will embrace is one of the monthly tackle subscription services available, which have boomed in popularity in recent months.
What’s aTackle Subscription?
Don’t feel bad; they’re relatively new and unless you frequent fishing websites or watch fishing videos on YouTube, odds are you won’t stumble across the two big subscription companies, Mystery Tackle Box and Lucky Tackle Box. Both offer quality tackle at 1-month, 3-month, 6-month or 12-month plans. Obviously, going for the year subscription is the best bang for your buck.
What Do I Get?
With each company, you get a box delivered to your door each month filled with a random collection of tackle. Items range from hooks and jigheads to bait scent and lures such as crankbaits or soft plastics. Lucky Tackle Box offers boxes tailor-made for specific species—bass, saltwater, or panfish (crappie, bluegill and perch)—while Mystery Tackle Box’s site features an extensive list of the products they’ve featured in their boxes.
Okay, Let’s Talk Price
For what you receive in the boxes, the cost of subscribing is a steal, especially if you opt for the 12-month option. Lucky’s price options start at $15 for a month-to-month plan, to $168/month for the 12-month plan, which equals to $14/month. Mystery offers a $20 single box, $45 for 3 months, $90 for 6 months and $180 for a full year.
Bonus: When I received my first box from each company, each one offered a nice discount on my next box. This is great if you’re still on the fence about footing the bill, or if you’re unsure if your angler will like the subscription. Simply order a single box and if the recipient wants to subscribe, they can, with a good deal on the first box.
