California Kayak Fisherman Fends Off Hammerhead Shark Attack

In yet another in the ongoing Summer of Sharks, a California kayak fisherman fought off a relentless hammerhead shark that kept coming back for more.

Mark McCracken told NBC News he filmed the 15-minute encounter with a GoPro camera while fishing about a half mile off Gaviota State Beach near Santa Barbara.

In the video, a roughly 4-foot hammerhead shark is seen aggressively attacking the kayak as McCracken repeatedly strikes it with his paddle as it gets close.

“It hit the back of my kayak twice and I turned around to see it,” McCracken told the station. “I couldn’t tell if he was biting [the kayak] or if he was head-butting it but soon as I saw it I just started going at him with the paddle.”

The 33-year-old construction worker said the shark followed him into less than three feet of water.

“Even after I got out of my kayak and made it to the beach he was sitting right there,” he said. “It was pretty creepy.”

Earlier this summer, another kayak fisherman near Santa Barbara was bitten by a shark that he had hooked.
